Broccoli Speak

We use terms we call “Broccoli Speak.” Why? Some add a bit of whimsy or lightness to our serious approach to education. Many are examples of how we empower our students to name their world. Some help explain our methods of meeting the school’s and students’ unique challenges. Others are just how we operate.

  • The Bored

Board meetings. Necessary. Student focused. Detailed. Productive. Presented with the idea of working on this kind of committee, students replied with a resounding yawn. It became “The Bored.”

  • Canine Crusaders

Our furry four-legged faculty and visitors are referred to as the canine crusaders. They search the school looking for those in need of unconditional emotional warmth, moral support, and a wet nose. In return, these super heroes ask only for a tummy rub, a head scratch, and perhaps a bit of that lunch you won’t finish.

  • Fair is Not Equal

At Broccoli Hall, we acknowledge that what is right for one student, may not be right for another. This is fair because it gives each student what they need to succeed in their educational career. It may not be equal because other students do not require the same kind of  support.

  • Freedom

Freedom is the sister publication of Pages. Students submit pictures of their work in Art Workshop, such as jewelry or artwork, or examples of work from English, such as poetry or other creative writing. The submissions are reviewed and assembled into books for everyone at the school. Freedom is Broccoli Hall's annual celebration of creativity and creative expression.

  • New Kids Day

The first day for new kids at Broccoli Hall is specifically for the orientation of our new incoming students. It is a day for them to meet the faculty and get to know the lay of the land at school. We also invite two or three returning students to attend to welcome our newest students, show them around the campus, and answer questions. There’s even a scavenger hunt to help familiarize them with their new school.

  • Pages

Pages is the sister publication of Freedom. Each year every student and faculty member creates their own unique page for our version of a yearbook. Using photos or drawings, they create images that reflect themselves and their year at the school. The students and faculty then write a personal note on copies for each student, faculty member, and even the dogs. A well-oiled production line collates all these pages into books customized for every individual at the school.  It's an amazing process that creates a unique memoir of a year in the life at Broccoli Hall.

  • Patch News

We share happenings and news from our garden via Patch News.

    • Catch up on our latest plans for our upcoming theatrical production
    • Find out what our students have been learning on our most recent Project FEAT excursion
    • See the jewelry and artwork created by our students in Art Workshop

Topics range across a variety of interests. Watch for new posts on our homepage.

  • Le Picnique

Ham Corwin, one of our namesakes, said school should always start with a picnic. So, we have one! All of our students, family, and faculty get together to celebrate beginnings. Parents meet teachers, other parents, and their student's Group. Students visit with other students and renew or make new acquaintances. New families are paired with host families to ease the transition. Returning parents and faculty provide the refreshments. And together, we celebrate the beginning of a new school year, as Ham intended.

  • Promb

Most school proms often come with the stress of needing to find a date or be invited. It’s all rather exclusive. We prefer the Broccoli Hall version where everyone is invited. Dates are optional. Having fun is required. This is our prom with a B for Broccoli.

  • Spring Fayre

Fayre is a ye olde English term for fair. In the tradition of an olde English Fayre, our resident afterschool theatrical troupe, The Moving Statues Theatre Company, presents an outdoor production as annually as possible. Traditionally held on a Saturday afternoon in May, students and families come together in the field next to school. Food and drink, made by students, is accompanied by live-student performances.

  • Sprouts

Sprouts is Broccoli Hall's monthly newsletter sent out to our faculty and families. Each edition shares the latest happenings and important dates with our school community.

  • Summercomes

Summercomes & Graduation are celebrations of the change of season - a look back on what our students have accomplished and a look ahead to their new possibilities and challenges. Parents, families, friends, faculty, and students gather together to celebrate the achievements of the school year. Awards, thank yous, diplomas, and other ceremonial niceties are enjoyed by all members of the school family under the Big Top. Our seniors graduate and remind us it’s not “Goodbye…” It’s “See ya!”

  • Syllabub

Mispronounced once, heard by all, and it stuck. This is our version of a syllabus or course plan with an added B for that special broccoli-ness.

  • Three Rules With No Room to Negotiate

These rules are designed by the Head of the School with the success and safety of our students in mind. There are no exceptions, no excuses, no negotiation.

    Thou shalt not jeopardize:

    1. Thy own safety and progress;

    2. The safety or progress of another student or teacher; or

    3. The School or its position in the community.
